Stella’s New Room + How to Paint over Wallpaper

March 24, 2016 ·

I’m excited to finally start sharing with you the updates we’ve done to the place we’re currently living! We are in an interesting situation in which we’re just kind of inhabiting a place for a brief amount of time. We quickly wanted to get down closer to my husband’s job and this house, owned by my husband’s family, was vacant.

It’s an amazing place on a huge piece of property and it’s right by my parents house so it’s a total score! However, there are plans to develop the land and most likely tear down the home. So, without a real timeline of when this is possibly going to happen, it’s really hard to know how long we will be able to live here. Since its obviously not going to be a forever home, or possibly even a year-long home (hopefully at least that long though!) we don’t want to pour in tons of money and time to re-do it. But, the house is OLD ok. OLD OLD. And as such I felt like it just really NEEDED some serious updates and help. So the name of the game in this home is to do things to give it an update, make us feel more comfortable and at home but do it easily and cheaply.

Following these guidelines, one thing that has had to go in a couple of rooms was the wallpaper. But, not only is wallpaper pretty much always a paint to remove, this one is even worse because it’s actually attached to a solid wall, rather than drywall. So, tearing it off is a disaster! It destroys the wall in addition to taking tons and tons of man hours. Without wanting to dedicate this much time and effort to any one place in the house, I decided it just HAD to be possible to paint over it!

The common belief however is that this is pretty much impossible. No one I talked to thought this was at all a good idea. But, after a little research, I was convinced it would be the fine and the right thing to do! So I did it! And it worked wonderfully! So, don’t listen to the nay sayers, listen to me!

Stella’s Whimsical Glam DIY Nursery

January 9, 2016 ·

mint, pink, black, gold and silver nursery 5

Well now that Stella is 19 months old and we’re about to move again, I’m finally sharing her nursery with you! Over a year ago, I shared this inspiration board for this future room and at that time, I was not envisioning mint green at all, or even all these whimsical elements, but I’m happy with the direction it went and even though it was a short-lived room I’m ready to show it to you today!

But I’m really only ‘ready’ in the sense that I just kind of had to stop, call it done, and photograph it so that I can actually pack it all up and leave it behind. Really, in the ideal sense, this room is not finished. I never quite got it to the point of doneness that I would have liked to. It doesn’t feel perfectly complete and there are even projects seen here that are flat-out half finished and not what I imagined. However, there are so many parts of the room that I do love and I’m also okay with the fact that it’ll never be “done.” Maybe this makes no sense but the fact is that this labor of love was fun, fits this house, this time in our lives, and is almost what I dreamed it would be. But, I feel like my design senses are headed in another direction and so I’m happy to leave the whimsical color of this space behind and see what the next house sets us up for.

I have always thought of this space as glamorous meets whimsical. Lots of metallics and glitter and velvet tufting meets circus animal cookie marquee lights, bubblegum machines and balloons. Perhaps this giant, gilded rubber ducky illustrates that perfectly. mint, pink, black, gold and silver nursery 9

And really, I think that defines my style in everything perfectly. My living room is gray and industrial but there are humorous quotes in the frames. My dress style is mostly neutral and layered but I top it off with a Harry Potter time-turner necklace. So this space is so me in that way and I love that. Of course it’s technically my daughter’s room, but, let’s be real, she’s not old enough to know, nor care, about what ‘her room’ looks like. This space, like her first birthday party, is for me. It’s for young me that just couldn’t wait to have a baby girl for a) the clothes and b) her room. (Don’t worry, before she came I wanted her for many more reasons that just those).

2015 Year in Review

January 5, 2016 ·

HAPPY 2016!!!

As I am sure at least some of you noticed by our lack of new content, we both took a quick holiday break from the blog to focus on school finals, work, and family time. And to be honest it went by way too fast and getting back into the swing of things is feeling extra tough this year. I definitely get the post-holiday blues.

However, both Machelle and I love the start of the new year because it allows us to reflect on the past year and double down on our goals for the next. To be honest we did not accomplish all of our goals this past year but we do have a renewed vigor behind us for 2016! We are still solidifying our precise goals so they are not quite yet at the point to share but trust me they will be fairly soon and we cannot wait to grow and experience new things with you all.

2015 was a year that I could not wait to be over. Too many times it just felt too hard too often and by early December I was like “see ya 2015!” However, placing blame on 12 calendar months is actually pretty silly when you start to think about it. Any year, any day even can be terrible or joyous and here we like to focus on the positive. Despite some of the heartache and stress, 2015 also brought the following: awesome blog projects including two fun blogger swaps; two (way too brief) weekends together in Utah; almost weekly business calls (this is included because we are very proud of our somewhat professionalism); a new blog design, travels to Mexico, France and Brazil (plus smaller road trips in between); Machelle and Stella living it up with me in DC while Greg was out of town; another year celebrating both of our marriages; Machelle fully attaining platinum blonde hair; successfully completing Whole30; Malissa finally starting a book club and of course Stella turning one.

It would not be a proper review post without sharing our favorite and most popular posts of the past year. What one was your favorite? Did you make any of them? What would you like to see more of in 2016?

First though I guess I should show you what we sent to our lovely swap partner, The Sweetest Occasion! You know those wonderful yarn wall hangings that have been all the rage lately? Well, Machelle and I were discussing making mini versions of them for a necklace (which would still be amazing to do wink, wink) but once we got this ornament blogger swap going I thought that the idea would also translate nicely into ornaments. I also had less traditional yarn colors available so if you want them to be extra festive feel free to grab the perfect shade or red and some gorgeous greens for these mini hangings!

Current House Updates

bright colors and white craft room | A Joyful Riot

We moved in to our new house oh only about 8 months ago and I’ve yet to get a single room where I want it décor-wise. But with a one year old, being a full time student, this blog and all the side projects we have going I’m not being too hard on my self about it! As long as I host a party every few months, I’ll bust out some projects right before it and get a little bit done! :)

Really though, I’ve been making slow progress where I can and I’m so happy with how things are turning out! Stella’s room is almost complete, my craft room is bright white and organized and I just painted the kitchen and living room last week! I thought you might enjoy a quick little tour through and see where the house is at currently.
