I’m finally ready to share the bright, happy and personal space where I create! Ok, realistically, I create all over my house! There’s always craft supplies lingering around all over the place. But, when it comes time to clean up, this is the room the supplies call home :)
I have been trying harder since I finished putting it all together to actually keep my crafty messes there. Mainly because I put the effort in to organize and decorate it, I might as well use it right? But sometimes it is easier to just bring the hot glue gun downstairs with the kiddos rather than haul everybody up there. Oh yes, this space is upstairs in my house.
There’s just a small area upstairs, part of the original house built in the early 1900’s. It’s three rooms; two smaller ones off of this large open space. One of those smaller rooms houses even more craft stuff, party supplies, and projects (somehow…) and the other one, I am currently in the process of re-vamping to create a super fun room that I am so excited about!
I think I previously mentioned in a post that I didn’t use this room for the last year because in the summer, no a/c reaches there and its pretty stifling… I also found out that almost no heat reaches it either, the joys of an old house! But, since its upstairs and gets a decent amount of sunshine (as well as the heat rises thing), it hasn’t been a huge problem. I plan on getting some kind of cooler up there this summer though, because how can I not use this space?!
Its so full of bright, colorful corners and vignettes that I just love being up there. It was previously covered in this really old wallpaper and since painting it white, it has brightened up SO much! I think that must be a big part of why I love white walls so much. Instant light! And for a blogger, you better believe I’m all about that natural brightness :D
Behind my desk is also my famous glitter wall! Jk, my wall has no reputation whatsoever….and you’re probably looking at this photo and thinking, well yeah…cus it’s not glittery…and that’s the bummer about the color of glitter I choose (white, iridescent). It is REALLY hard to capture in photos unless light is gleaming directly off of it. Its a blessing and a curse. Sometimes I just want a pink wall and not glitter and so I can have that in photos. But also, I’d like to be like “everyday I’m sparklin’!” and I’m kinda not… so¯\_(ツ)_/¯. But, I just want to throw out there that if you follow my tutorial for painting a glitter wall, you can just choose a different color of glitter and it’ll totally show all the time!
I have seriously filled up ALL those drawers with crafting and party supplies. Plus I have 12 more plastic drawers not pictured here, a 16 cubby shelving system full of fabric and several bins and shelves in one of the other rooms up there full. I don’t quite understand how it happened…ahem…target…
This wall of drawers was what of course drew me to the space as a crafting and office area. I loved the idea of painting them all a fun, modern color but I didn’t love the reality of having to paint them at all. Drawers and cupboards are zero fun to paint. Well, all painting is zero fun..but drawers especially so! So I settled on painting all the knobs a fun array of colors and I love how they turned out! Just enough umph to bring that wood to life but not painstaking at all.
This space is kind of where I throw out color everywhere and just bask in it! Malissa and I always talk about how much we love minimal, Scandinavian decor but we just can’t quite commit to the monochrome scheme. I guess it’s because I have 18 zillion colorful straws and berry baskets that I just can’t bear to part with :D
Of course, my favorite part of the room is the focal point, the fireplace. I’m not sure that its actually functional now but lighting an fire in a wood burning stove that probably hasn’t been used in at least 50 years is not something I’m likely to do anyway. So I think painting it turquoise was really the right decision! I learned a few things along the way that I’ll be sharing in a tutorial sometime soon so stay tuned for that if you’re interested in painting an old wood burning stove!
I tried to fill this space with things that made me happy. Especially because the place where you work can get tiresome and stressful so I wanted to try and avoid that here!
And there’s just always balloons in my studios because I can’t bear to pop them after a photoshoot and I love how they randomly fall down the stairs and into the rest of my house. Turn a corner or open a closet and get greeted by a random balloon! Nothin wrong there.
So thanks for checkin’ out MY room! It truly is a space that I catered just to me and I love that about it. Sources for most of what you see in the photos is at the end of the post below!
