I knew months ago that this Christmas would be all about the copper. The hipster in me wanted to not include copper in my decor because of this but in the end I just really like it so I’m gonna be like everybody else and not even care about that.
But what will make my copper decor unique is the accents I made using, yup you guess it, dish scrubbers!
So if you’re like me and procrastinated buying that awesome copper Christmas wrapping, etc at IKEA and now it’s all sold out in your store, don’t worry! We’ll make do and we’ll spend like hardly anything doing it.
1.Gently pull your scrubby loose, one end will separate and you’ll see a knot in the middle. Pull this knot up and out and then unroll the scrubby all the way down.
2. When it’s unravelled, cut off the very end portion. This part frays out a little farther than the rest so it’s easier to get rid of it. Plus, we’ll use this part to make bows n stuff!
3.Sort of bunch up the cut ends, put them together and dab a little glue in there and press. You don’t want to use a lot of glue or press on it too early or it’ll turn white and be noticeable.
4.Pull a loose copper filament and wrap in around this connection to further secure.
5. Twist the material all the way down. Twist it tight because it’ll start to come loose once you let go but should hold some curve if you twisted it tight enough.
Stuff it into your tree! I should mention that I only have this 4′ tree so I only combined two scrubbies per garland but a taller tree will need more. Once your garlands are in the tree, you should be able to twist them a little more if needed and the tree will hold it in place.
For my colors this year I chose black and white with a little bit of gray and {obviously!} copper. I like the scandinavian sort of minimalist look and this tree fits right in this year since we just moved and I have very little Christmas decor. Maybe I’ll stock up at the end of this season when I have a better idea what this room will look like for next year and things go on sale!
To give a copper touch to some of my gifts, I fashioned some bows and stuff from the left over rings I cut off in step 2. Pulling loose strings of it allowed me to wrap it around gifts in a way I really liked! Like really thin ribbon!
Some of the rings I just compressed in the middle and wrapped another loose string around to make little bows.
Even just pulling a ring as wide as it would go and slipping the gift in to it gave a look I liked! Really there are so many options here. Just play around with it! Bend it, curl it, wrap it and see what you can come up with!
I hope you are employing copper in your home in some way right now! Really, you need at least one metallic in your Christmas decor so if you don’t, here’s an easy, cheap way to add it in now! Plus the metal gives such a nice gleam from the lights reflecting and it’s not too overpowering. Let us know what metallic you’re leaning towards right now!
I cannot believe how talented you girls are!!! I should have had you teaching projects to the kids in school!
Ha oh thank you so much!!! That would have been fun to assist you in school and relive the great 5th grade! :)
