DIY Pretend Makeup Kit for Kids

June 20, 2016 ·

Stella LOVES to play with my makeup. When I’m getting ready sometimes she will swipe a carton of brow shadow without me noticing and it will take a minute of her being extra extra quiet before I see that she’s created a big ol’ mess on her face! Its adorable but also messy and wasteful and can be a pain to clean off. So I’ve always wanted to get her some pretend makeup to play with and keep her entertained.

However, I already feel like I don’t want my $40 chemicals on her face so I cannot imagine wanting whatever is in those $5 kits to be on her precious, soft skin. Plus, just because it’s “play” and “washable” doesn’t mean it won’t create a mess for me to clean up. So that really doesn’t solve any problems for me! The solution was to create this kit that’s full of all the essential makeup components but without any of the mess or chemicals!

That’s right, this kit has fake lipstick, fake eyeshadow, fake blushes and bronzers, fake mascara and even fake nail polish! None of it leaves the carton at all but her little two-year-old self is just as happy playing with all of this as she is with the real thing! She doesn’t even seem to realize that none of it goes on her (or my) face.

I gave this to Stella for her birthday present and she was in love! She rubbed the “eyeshadows” on her face, on all her new stuffed animal’s faces, and on my face. It was so cute and just the reaction I was hoping for! Now my plan is to keep the kit in my bathroom so whenever I am getting my own makeup on, she can also play and be distracted doing hers!

This kit was really fun to think up and create and easy too! The most time consuming thing is just waiting for some of the parts to dry completely.

When I was all done I filled out the kit with a bunch of brushes, sponges, clear lipliner and an eyelash curler! Honestly, even the brushes themselves would’ve made Stella happy! She loves to play with brushes but the lipsticks and eyeshadows really sent her over the top! And she always asks to paint her nails by saying “pig? pig?” She calls her nails pigs because of the “this little piggy” song we sing with her toes :D

Then I put it all together in this organizer that I love but I know all kids would be equally happy if it was just gifted to them in any old box so don’t worry about going out of your way to make a beautiful kit that will probably get torn apart quickly anyway :)

If you also have a child in your life who would love some play makeup, find the tutorial to create all of these fun things right here and they can have lots of fun without any mess for you! Maybe you’ll even get a minute to yourself, wouldn’t that be wonderful? And you won’t even have to worry that all the quiet means trouble because all of this colorful fun stays place in its carton and not on your carpet or precious one’s face!
