A Joyful Riot

A Large Gathering of Happy Things

DIY Cardboard Pie Box

November 19, 2014 ·

DIY Cardboard Pie Box | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriotI love wood pie boxes. I think they’re so pretty! And while I certainly think we could whip one of those up, it wouldn’t be free, it wouldn’t be easy and it wouldn’t be a great way to recycle which this one is!

DIY Cardboard Pie Box | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriotWith Thanksgiving coming up, these boxes would be perfect for bringing your pies to your dinner plans or for sending your guests off with leftovers. Or use these boxes for neighbor and friend gifts this holiday season, because who wouldn’t want pie dropped off on their doorstep?

    Materials

  • Cardboard (preferably an empty paper box) //
  • Scissors //
  • Xacto knife //
  • Hot glue & gun //
  • Mod Podge //
  • Kraft paper //

1. Take the lid of an empty paper box (these can easily be found at office buildings in the trash/dumpsters or sometimes even just out in the hallways). Use a pie to determine how big your box needs to be or just measure the width and draw a line to make a square. Cut along your line so you’re left with a 4-sided open box.

DIY Cardboard Pie Box | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriot2. Measure the inside of the box and make a mark about 1/4 inch down and another one 2/16″ (or as thick as your cardboard) below that. Do this the whole way down the two sides of your box and then draw two lines connecting all the marks.

3. Use an Xacto knife to cut along these lines and remove that strip.

DIY Cardboard Pie Box | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriot4. Cut two strips of cardboard the same height as the two sides of the box.

5. Apply Mod Podge liberally to your sides and stick the two strips to them.

6. Cut the strips to match the sides.

7. Cut another strip the length of the front of the box and only as high as the slit in the sides.

8. Use hot glue to attach this to the front.

DIY Cardboard Pie Box | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriot9. Cut another section of cardboard about the size of the bottom of the box, this will be the top that slides into your sides.

DIY Cardboard Pie Box | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriotI then covered the box and the top with kraft paper, wrapping it like a present and then sketched on a little saying in black pen. I also think this would look beautiful decopauged in a pretty paper {thinking my favorite World Market papers would be delightful}.
