A Joyful Riot

A Large Gathering of Happy Things

Lounging Popsicle Stick Sloths

June 1, 2020 ·

It is June and that means hopefully a lot of pool time over the next few months! For us, that will probably be a small kiddie pool for my son but still, it counts right?! And sloths are the ultimate lounging animal, known for their slow movement they are a symbol of laziness. But laziness is not always a bad thing – especially if you are on a pool float enjoying a summer day!

In fact, sloths are the slowest mammal on the planet and only move around 123-125 feet a day. This slow movement is an attempt to conserve energy since they have very low metabolisms and have a low-calorie diet.

Juice Box Vases

May 28, 2020 ·

I am truly having a lot of fun finding new crafts to do with recycled goods! Turns out necessity really helps bring out my creativity. I am only a little bit bummed that I made this recently because it would have been a really good Mother’s Day DIY. Maybe next year!

These are such fun and you can make the vase vertical like I did or horizontal for more of a planter look! You can also draw or paint designs on the juice box and you can make the flowers using any material you have on hand! I quickly drew some but some water color flowers would be stunning! So many fun options here!

Toilet Paper Roll Swan

May 21, 2020 ·

I love this little swan so much! He is calming to me for some reason but his face also looks a little bit upset as well which is pretty much how I feel. The upset part, not the calm. I am fine, don’t worry, just over being at home all the time! It will be ok, we will all get through this. I am amazed at what humans can quickly adapt to and how resilient we all are. But a change of scene would be nice right about now.

And I keep thinking of the first time my son saw swans. We were in Arizona visiting family and there was a little pond at a nearby park with swans he just stared at them. He was 7 months old and didn’t scream or crawl to them, just looked out at the water and observed them. I need to take him to see some swans now and see what his reaction is like a year later. The other day he screamed with delight over a worm and ant so I think he would be pretty stoked about a swan! For now he has this little DIY swan that he can interact with and destroy.

Juice Box VW Van

May 18, 2020 ·

In general I am not a car person. However, one exception is vintage cars and vans. Like VW vans. Every time I see one on the road I get so excited! They usually are in amazing colors and are just cute. I don’t know if you should call cars cute, but these vans are.

I was looking at some cute vintage car graphics the other day while my son had a juice box and realized that a juice box is a perfect shape for a van or truck! So in addition to my toilet paper rolls, I am now saving all juice boxes for future craft projects! Don’t worry – I don’t have a crazy amount of them because I try to limit juice drinking to healthier choices BUT they are a helpful treat to have on hand!

Paper Plate Beehive

May 15, 2020 ·

Create cute beehives by layering paper plates and finish it all off by adding honey bees to the outside.

So, in all honesty, I have not been following a set weekly theme lately with my son. It has been over 8 weeks with all of us home and I have sort of let everything go a bit. But I still love the ideas of projects that are not only fun but educational. And creating a beehive is the perfect opportunity to teach about honey bees and how amazing they are. Plus, most of the materials are likely hanging around your house so hopefully you don’t need to venture out to get supplies.
