SereKNITy + 16 Soothing Gifts for Moms and Gal Pals

May 8, 2017 ·

Sereknity soothing crochet and knit book + the ultimate relaxing gift guide

Last year I saw the funniest video of a mom explaining that you can all forego the kitchen appliances, clothing items, and gardening supplies; all we moms really want is just a day to be alone and relax! In fact, the only Mother’s Day gift I’ve ever asked for was to sleep in.

Since a day off is nearly impossible to come by as a mom, we thought a gift guide made up items that will help all the moms in your life achieve at least a few moments of relaxation was called for! We’ve got 15 soothing items for any lady on your list this summer, featuring this happy and sweet DIY crochet and knitting book SereKNITy: Peaceful Projects to Soothe and Inspire.

I can’t tell you enough how much I love the premise of this book! A lot of times, all the DIY inspiration and how-tos out there can feel overwhelming. But, instead of a focus on the pinterest-perfect, this book is all about the peaceful time spent making the project. A way to slow down and recharge with uncomplicated, practical patterns for the loveliest handmade items.

Besides making you feel at-ease with the projects within, this book also features pretty photography, and lovely illustrations. Plus, the projects are things you actually want to make, like cute boot cuffs and fluffy eye pillows.

Since both my mom and my mother-in-law crochet and knit, I immediately thought this book would make a great gift for either of them. While I definitely think this book by itself is more than a great present, I’m also the kind of person who likes to put things together with complimenting items, in baskets if I can! So I started brainstorming a bunch of other pretty and relaxing items to go with it. I decided to share them all with you in case you’re also looking for soothing gifts for mom!

And, since this guide is cutting it a little close (in case you’ve been away from the calendar recently–Mother’s day is in 6 days), this guide is also perfect for all the women in your life! We all do so much (often too much) and as such could all use some calm and quiet. Looking for birthday presents? Bridesmaid gifts? Shower or just because presents? We got ya covered. And lets not forget how many teachers out there could use one of these items as a last day of school present!

So click through for 15 more peace-promoting gifts for all the gals in your life.

DIY Amethyst Jewelry Box

November 18, 2014 ·

DIY Gem Jewelry Box | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriotDIY Gem Jewelry Box | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriot

A few months back we saw this really beautiful pyrite jewelry box at Anthropologie. Now, Machelle and I adore everything at Anthropologie and would even say that it is our favorite place ever. But some things there are a bit pricier than I would like (definitely the case here) and sometimes a DIY version is very doable! As soon as we saw this one we thought it would be a great Anthropologie knockoff!

Here is the original, $1,498.00 jewelry box:anthropologie box

    Materials

  • Acrylic Box (I used this one) //
  • 2 Amethysts (I got mine at the National Museum of Natural History but you can find them at several ebay and etsy sellers) //
  • Gorilla glue //

1. You want to pick two gems/minerals that are close in size (especially width). Use super glue (gorilla, E-6000, etc) to glue the first one to the middle top of the acrylic box.

2. Wait for the glue to partially dry and then open the lid and glue the next gem to the middle, directly under the first one.DIY Gem Jewelry Box | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriot

Wait for the glue to completely set (usually 24 hours) and then start using your new jewelry box! And $17 is a lot better than almost $1500.

DIY Hanging Vases

September 7, 2014 ·

185229This simple building project only requires a few tools, a couple hours and any variation in size and color you can imagine! Framed in a wood box, delicate mini vases hang at varying lengths to display real or fake flowers. Hang it from a wall for a permanent piece of artwork that changes with the season depending on your fillings, use it as a centrepiece that is just as beautiful from every angle or always keep it on your countertop to happily greet you every time you pass it! The possibilities for display are endless and the steps to build it are the same whether you make it to house 1 or 10 vases.

DIY Photo Holders

August 27, 2014 ·

cardholder3DSC_0390-2

These little holders can be used for table numbers, photos, cards, invitations, place cards, post-it notes, and more! Little ones would be a really beautiful way to hold your seating placements actually. I think I like these best when used to display special little notes and cards.

    Materials

  • Polymer clay //
  • Knife //
  • Copper spray paint //
  • Painter’s tape //

cardholder5

1. Take your polymer clay and roll it into a ball.

2. Take your knife and use it to create any shape you want. For the first one, I just took little sections off of the ball for a faceted shape. For the others, I made triangles of different sizes and hexagons (including a lop-sided hexagon that I quite like). clay13. Once your shape is cut, use the knife to slice a small sliver at the top. This is where the photo/card will go into so test the depth with a photo to make sure it is sufficient.

4. Bake the clay according to instructions. For my clay, I baked it 30 minutes at 275 degrees. Once the clay is done baking, let the clay dry for about 30 minutes.
DSC_03365. Use painter’s tape to tape off any sections that you don’t want covered with the spray paint.
clay26. Spray paint the clay. I only needed to do one coat. Once the spray paint is dry, take the painter’s tape off and place your photos in the holders!
photoholders1DSC_0360My super talented sister-in-law is always sending cards. Seriously, she is the card queen. Every birthday or event she immediately sends you a thank you card for- she is so thoughtful. One time I was in Utah and went to my niece’s birthday party and two days later when I got home, I had a thank you card waiting for me. It was incredible. And these holders are perfect for showing off her endless adorable cards!
cardholder4 cardholder2They are also great for holding all types of invitations in! And this amazing Alice in Wonderland postcard Machelle sent me!
