It almost seems like Valentine’s exists just to provide ample opportunities for word play. The world should really be this creative more often! Everywhere you look there is a fun pun related to love or friendship. Often it is combined with chocolate which is obviously a win on all accounts. These tags come in two different designs to compliment any candy or sprinkles you use to decorate your chocolate spoons with. Or if you want to provide something that is not a sweet you can decorate wooden spoons (there are lots of fun ideas out there like this and this!) and then tie the tag around the spoon.
I’m so excited to share this recipe with you today! My mom first made this syrup probably 10 years ago and it was love at first bite! This. Is. Crazy. Good. Like really, there are almost no words!
Now, being someone that belongs to the Buddy The Elf crowd (in that I believe syrup is one of the four main food groups) I don’t believe you can go wrong with any syrup! French toast is amazing, waffles are amazing, pancakes are amazing, but let’s be real, the only reason I eat those things is for a way to get the syrup into my mouth. I literally drench my breakfast baked goods in the stuff. And I’ll take any kind! Can’t go wrong with a good maple but I am sure a sucker for flavored kinds, especially berry ones.
My dad is a syrup aficionado, both of my parents always made matching syrups to our breakfasts. Blueberry pancakes got blueberry syrup, etc. But there were these few months growing up, I wanna say Malissa and I were like 12…where my dad went crazy with the syrups! I remember a strawberry-kiwi one, a lemon one and one time we went camping and forgot the syrup and he whipped up a Tang one. Yeah, the weird orange juice drink! We had a carton and he somehow thickened it up and we put it on our pancakes haha!
But none of the syrups I’ve ever had in my life compare to this beauty right here. And I guarantee none that you’ve eaten will either! K listen, here is everything you need to know–ICE CREAM IS ONE OF THE INGREDIENTS in this syrup.
Not kidding. Ice cream is melted and mixed in to other amazing, decadent ingredients (read: cream, vanilla and sugar) and the lushess, thick result is TO DIE FOR. Like literally, if someone walked into my house with a gun and threatened to take it from me, I might do some crazy jump-roll-dive-thing to save it.
And, with Christmas coming up, I really think you’ll win over the neighborhood by handing this life-changingness out as gifts. But be warned, them neighbors are probably gonna come calling for the recipe!
Even if you don’t want to buy cute syrup bottles (which you can find in restaurant supply stores or often in places like Big Lots for about $3 a piece), I think just using mason jars would be more than perfect enough.
We’ve done all the work for you by making these free printable labels to put on the jars and gift tags that are perfect for any gift, not just this syrup! So click through for the recipe and then scroll to the bottom for both those freebies!
This may be an unpopular opinion but I don’t really like cake. Listen. Cakes are cute, frosting is my secret boyfriend, and cake batter is easily the greatest flavor on planet earth. Sometimes I eat cake batter and think “my mouth could not possibly be big enough to fit as much of this in it as I feel like I need to right now.” But just a regular, spongey, baked cake is not something I ever really want to eat. I think maybe it’s the frosting to cake ratio. See, I like (sometimes love) cupcakes. And I think that’s because there is a decently high pile of frosting sitting on top of like 4 bites of cake.
So for our birthday the last 9 years, we haven’t had a traditional cake. When we turned 18 we got cake batter ice cream from Coldstone and Lofthouse soft sugar cookies and that was our cake and I still think it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. After that, we’ve kind of just had a random spattering of treats all throughout the day (mainly because we no longer live with a mother who makes sure to get us an official cake). At some point, whether its over pancakes or a milkshake, we get sung to so we’re not missing anything birthday-ish at all, we’re just not eating a sub-par dessert! Although we’d probably be better off if we did…might not justify as many other treats throughout the day…
Regardless, one of my all time favorite desserts of my whole life, and one that many member’s of our family have chosen as their “birthday cake”, is this pistachio pudding layer dessert my mom has made ever since I can remember. In my house we call it “David’s Delight”, I’m actually not sure if that’s because my dad loves it or my older brother loves it (they’re both named David). Well, actually, I do know they both love it (just not sure who it’s named after specifically) as does every other person in my family and every person at every work, church or friend function I’ve ever brought this treat to. It is a hit because IT IS HEAVEN IN YOUR MOUTH.
It may look like a typical potluck-y, old-person-layered-something, but it’s not. It spans the ages and the taste buds and it’s sinfully delightful. This is, truthfully, my favorite home made treat ever.
So in honor of our upcoming birthday (t minus 3 days) I decided to amp up the dessert a teeny bit with two of my other favorite flavors, cherry and amaretto, and rename it “Twin’s Delight”!
Pistachio [pudding] and amaretto are already similar in taste so they blend perfectly in this sweet concoction. The cherry is very subtle and can be left out altogether if you prefer. Or even amp it up more! (Just be sure to add as much powdered sugar as maraschino cherry juice to help the texture remain the same).
If you’ve done or are doing a Whole30, or are trying your hand at the paleo diet, or even if you’re just trying to eat healthier and replace some of those chips with more nutritious options, you may have discovered nuts are your very best friend. I know I have!
I’ve been trying to stick to the paleo diet for most of 2015 though I’ve fallen way off the wagon a few times and still don’t force myself to be perfect every day. I’ve also done two whole30’s in that time. I absolutely love the way I feel when I eat clean but it is a lot of work, especially when you’ve gone from never cooking at all ever to making all three meals a day from scratch.
When I am doing well sticking to the diet, though, nuts are my go-to snack. I know on both diets you’re still supposed to watch your snacking and not go over board on the highly fatty nuts but I’ve found even when I do, I still feel great and lose weight so I don’t stress too much about those rules.
I love raw almonds and cashews but sometimes I want something a little different! I’ve been playing around with roasting nuts and come up with these 6 fabulous recipes that are all downright DELICIOUS! There’s 2 savory options and 4 sweet ones (I still got that sweet tooth…). I find that these are especially great when you’re getting together with friends and family who aren’t as concerned with diet but you want some compliant snacks on hand. They’re also the kind of paleo/whole30 treat that’ll convince the strongest critic that you can eat yummy while being healthy. Does cinnamon roll and pumpkin pie almonds, coconut cashews and candied walnuts sound good to you? Yeah, I thought so…
All of these recipes are a simple mixing of ingredients and then roasting in a low temp oven for 1 hour except the walnuts, those you just mix in a sauce pan and allow to cool! Nothing hard or requiring any kitchen skills WHATSOEVER. click through to see all the recipes + pictures and enjoy!
