Big Boy Burger Costume DIY

October 18, 2018 ·

A costume for those big-eyed, juice-box-bellied babies in your life. Recreate the iconic Bob’s Big Boy Statue with this Big Boy Burger Costume DIY!

Ok. Even if you don’t get this costume right off the bat LOOK AT THAT YUMMY BOY!!! Are you kidding me?! It’s a miracle I haven’t eaten him up already. This was his first solo blog modeling job and he was the sweetest, cutest little dude the whole time! AND, he turned two just yesterday (or today as I write this!!) Can you believe that!? I shared his first birthday, a Halloween Carnival here just a couple weeks ago and even that party feels so recent! But it was a year ago!! I love that he’s getting older though, TBH. It’s so much more fun (and way easier than when he was baby) haha.

I’ve always thought my kids had very vintage-style faces. Like Kewpie dolls. They have these very timeless, yet young, features. And one night, my brother in law says “You know what Otto looks like? There’s this vintage statue… It’s like of a little boy, holding a plate of donuts or something…” And I knew exactly what he was picturing! The moment he said it I thought “OMG YES!”

But, neither of us could remember exactly what it was we were thinking of! We knew it was a boy holding something and he had a round ol’ belly and that it was an iconic thing. We just could not put our finger upon it or find what we were looking for by Googling. I never forgot it though, I’d sometimes try to find it again, I just knew it looked just like my son!

Fast forward a couple months and finally I said it to my husband: “Otto looks just like this vintage image I can think of but I can’t remember what it is. It’s like a sign or a statue or something…there’s this cute little boy holding a plate of donuts or something I swear..But I can’t find it online…”

Without a seconds hesitation he knew EXACTLY what it was I was talking about! He whips out his phone and brings up this picture of the Big Boy statue from a Southern California burger Joint, Bob’s Big Boy. (Here is a fun little history on the place.) And I was like “That’s it!!!” Just like that, he understood my cryptic message and solved the mystery haha!

DIY Birthday Party Family Halloween Costume

September 22, 2018 ·

As we get ready for Halloween this year, here’s a look back at our last year’s DIY birthday party family halloween costume! Complete with cake, party hat, presents, and confetti!

Birthday Party Family Costume ideas

I’ve been brainstorming our family halloween costume for months, and as usual, I am planning a few costumes this year haha. But before I can share those, I had to take a look back at our family costume last year! We went as a birthday party!

DIY party hat halloween costume

Our 3 year old daughter went as a party hat which was a costume she absolutely loved! She still dresses up in it often :)

DIY sheet cake wagon + birthday candle costume

And our 1 year old went as a birthday candle in a sheet cake wagon! Looking like a bobblehead figure!

He was a big inspiration for this group costume as a whole because I was planning his one year birthday party at the same time so birthday things were on my mind! Plus, I knew I wanted to incorporate either his stroller or our wagon into his costume. Even if he had been walking great by that time, I would never plan on a baby doing well around the neighborhood for trick or treating! I’ve always loved the baby costumes that use transportation (there are some seriously genius stroller/wagon costumes out there!) so I was excited to try my hand at our own version and a sheet cake seemed to be the perfect fit.

Birthday Party Family Costume ideas

As for me, I went as a bag of confetti and my husband went as a stack of birthday presents. All the costumes were fairly simple but I thought I’d share the DIY for each of them here. Sit tight, there’s a lot of birthday themed costumes to see here :D

DIY Balloon Dog Halloween Costume

Hooray, it’s time for our first Halloween costume tutorial! And ALSO-my son’s blog debut!! This guy turns ONE in just a few days (somehow), so it’s about time he get in front of the camera for AJR :D

And, really, it couldn’t be for a more-fun post, I just love this costume idea! We’re a litter of balloon dogs! Now, I can’t fold a balloon animal to save my life (to be fair-I’ve never even tried…) but I sure can dress me and my babies like one. This costume is so easy, and I was so happy to have a little photoshoot of my kids and I, even if we’re dressed as colorful dogs haha!

Originally, it was just going to be me in these photos, but then I realized how freaking cute little kids would be as balloon animals and I just had to incorporate them. It sure was harder to make the photos happen, but luckily I had help from my mom (I always have to use a Grandma for costume photos!) and sister in law. And the work was totally worth it-if nothing else, I just get a kick out of my daughters posing and twirling.

A year sure does make a big difference in a toddler! Though the threes have, in general, been rougher than the twos, getting these pictures was so much easier than her costume last year. You’d never know it from the pictures (cus, again, I had Grandma magic) but girl was a little pill that day. This year, she sat still while I drew on her nose and pinned on her tail. Then she happily danced around for a bunch of smiling pictures. I didn’t even have to bribe her with chocolate once! And I mean, Otto is always such a delight, it’s not hard to get some happy photos of him!

DIY Lawn Flamingos in Halloween Costumes!

October 9, 2017 ·

DIY lawn flamingos in halloween costumes halloween lawn flamingos

Eeeeeek! I am so excited about my newest Halloween decoration/the cutest little lawn flamingos I’ve ever seen/this post! haha, I sure hope this post makes up for the colossal break we’ve had since the last post. I kinda think it might….I mean..Halloween lawn flamingos in costume

Look at these little cuties! So last year I saw several people sharing around skeleton lawn flamingos and they were so awesome! I was thinking how cool it would be to have a whole fleet of them in my yard for Halloween. But then, I thought “why not make them all into different Halloween-themed things?!” A flamingo can dress up just as good as a human can and I believe this post proves it!

And in the end, I didn’t even make a skeleton haha! Honestly, it seemed like more work than I wanted to do and I wanted to put out a wholly unique set of Halloween lawn flamingos. So! We have a black cat, a ghost, a devil, a mummy, a superhero, a witch (probably my fave!), a jack o’ lantern pumpkin, frankenstein, bride of frankenstein, and a hippie (ok, maybe this one is my fave!).

I’m pretty enamored with these little guys! I think any one of them would be a great addition to anyone’s Halloween decor but the whole party of em is pretty dang fun, wouldn’t ya say?!

8 EASY Maternity Costumes for Halloween

October 17, 2016 ·

8 of the easiest maternity costumes ever! Free templates to make simple shirts so you can be carefree and comfy in your pregnant belly on Halloween.

8 of the easiest maternity costumes ever! Free templates to make simple shirts so you can be carefree and comfy in your belly on Halloween!

Let’s face it, being super pregnant for Halloween may not be the most fun thing ever. All the activities seem to be a little less appealing when there is a lack of energy. Walking around the neighborhood trick or treating: not as easy or as enjoyable with that extra pooch. And costumes can already be stressful so add on all the pregnancy stuff and it may seem downright impossible! Well, never fret! We’ve created 8 of the easiest maternity costumes ever for you today!

DIY balloon belly easy maternity costume. Just a shirt and felt. Free templates in post! | A Joyful Riot

Seriously, all you need for each of these outfits is a plain t-shirt and a little felt. We’ve included the templates for all the cut parts of the felt (and the cut files in case you’re lucky enough to be using a Cricut!) so there is no work coming up with the how. It’s already done for you!

These costumes are all about the belly! They require nothing beyond decoration of the bump which means, yes, you CAN wear leggings all day/night! Glory! Since the bump is definitely the cutest part of pregnancy, these costumes perfectly accentuate it, which I love.

DIY donut belly easy maternity costume. Just a shirt and felt. Free templates in post! | A Joyful Riot

All your faves are here folks! Donut, cookie, poke ball, fruit slices, disco ball, and a balloon! So not only are these easy, they’re super trendy :) I just couldn’t help including all this year’s favorites in this round up. And they were all just perfect for round prego bellies!

I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t love posing for a bunch of photos (and subsequently posting them on the internet) while 37 weeks pregnant a.k.a. about to pop a.k.a. feeling really fat. But I just knew I couldn’t let this year pass by without doing some maternity costume DIYs! This is the only time I ever plan on being pregnant around Halloween (because I plan on this being our last baby!). So, it felt like a great opportunity to come up with some fun ways to dress the bump!

I love how little effort these are. Especially if you already have children, you know it’s hard to find time for your own costume, after stressing about theirs! So this is the perfect choice for Mommas all around! I am planning on having this baby before Halloween (although my due date actually IS Halloween) but I might still sport one of these for the holiday seeing as how I’ll probably still look 5 months pregnant. Oh postpartum joys! :D Oh well! This is literally PERFECT for that crazy time right after baby comes. I can throw on a shirt no matter how tired I am (in fact I’ll have to anyway…haha).
