Handheld Birthday Mini Piñatas

September 16, 2014 ·

IMG_0250There is no way anyone in the whole world doesn’t love piñatas. Something covered in colorful fringe that’s literally bursting with treats and toys, you just can’t not love that!

These mini ones are, dare I say, even a little more delightful. They’re personal sized so they’re perfect for party favors and 100% of your guests can leave happy that they were the one to break open the piñata instead of disappointed that they had to watch someone else do it because each of these guys break open right in your hands!

    Materials

  • Thin cardboard like cereal boxes //
  • Tissue or crepe paper //
  • Seam ripper //
  • Tape //
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick //
  • Treats, toys, etc

The shapes you can choose to do are endless but for this tutorial I went with number candles and a little gift box. You can download a template for these thick numbers and the flame shape below:

Trace your numbers onto thin cardboard, cereal boxes work perfectly, and cut them out. the sides and bottom of the box are the perfect size to use for the sides of your piñatas. Choose somewhere about the middle of your numbers to do your perforation. Using something small and sharp (I used a seam ripper) poke little holes in a line across your top and bottom shapes. Match the sides up to the fronts and figure out where the perforation should go to match up, then poke those holes. Tape the sides onto one number.

2Fill your little piñatas with all sorts of goodies!

IMG_0068Attach the other number to close up your piñata. Remember not to apply tape over where your perforations meet. Then cut some fringe out of tissue or crepe paper and beginning at the bottom glue the fringe on layering them on top of one another, each a little higher. Trim around when done.

3IMG_0236For the flames, I just cut the shape on to normal thickness cardboard, layered on yellow tissue paper and then hot glued them on to the tops of the numbers.

IMG_0230IMG_0239Instruct your guests to hold them on each side and then bend downward, they should rip right open along your perforation to reveal the wonderment within!

Gold at the End of the Mini Rainbow Piñatas

Mini rainbow pinatas for your St Patrick's day! Fill With gold things and find the gold at the end of the rainbow | A Joyful RiotMini rainbow pinatas for your St Patrick's day! Fill With gold things and find the gold at the end of the rainbow | A Joyful Riot

I LOVE rainbows! I love them! I always have. It’s like colorful happiness just appearing in the sky magically! I know it’s not magic and is actually science and I also know there are not nearly enough of them happening in my life.

I also think that I should celebrate St. Patrick’s day a little better seeing as how it’s kind of a rainbow holiday! In all seriousness, I definitely plan to when Stella gets a little older, little green footprints left by the leprechaun and everything! For now, though, we have pinatas! I’ve deemed them suitable for any age {because I love them still} so this is a St. Patrick’s day activity/craft that I can do all by myself without little kids to validate it.

These ones are pull piñatas which I love because you get all the goodies while leaving your cute work still in tact. I filled mine with all gold goodies so it would be like a gold at the end of the rainbow thing since it’s St. Patty’s Day time but you can fill yours with all the colors of the rainbow, or absolutely whatever you want!!

Mini Heart Breaker Pinatas

February 9, 2015 ·

Mini Heart Breaker Valentine Pinatas | A Joyful Riot

I’m obviously obsessed with mini pinatas, I have done them for nearly every holiday this past year. And that’s because they’re awesome! Personal pinatas that burst open right in your hands = the best. And these little hearts are such a fun way to pass out your valentines this year. Tell your sweeties to break your heart and they’ll be really happy they did.

Piñata Stockings

December 15, 2014 ·

Make mini pinatas for stockings! | A Joyful Riot @ajoyfulriot

We teamed up with Mom’s Best Network to share 7 fun holiday crafts! Be sure to visit the link to check out some adorable DIYs.

I think the stocking is one of the most fun parts of Christmas. I remember feeling like my stocking was almost never-ending when I was little and of course candy is always my favorite part of any holiday! But this year my little family didn’t have matching stockings so I was thinking I really needed to sew some up! I love sewing, I used to do it all the time but lately it just hasn’t sounded as fun to me. Probably mostly because my machine is making a loud squeaking noise and it’s in the room right next to Stella’s so if she’s sleeping I am NOT going to turn that thing on. It’s probably just a matter of oiling the right part but I can’t seem to figure out what that is…anyway! The stockings I did end up making satisfied both my want to not sew, my need for matching-ness and my desire for fun! I give you, The Pinata Stocking!

Right in your little one’s hands!! Right in the middle of your festivus Christmas morning, you’ll feel like you’re having a mini party because piñatas will be breaking left and right!

You ready for this?

Party Starters! How to Throw a Pizza Party

August 14, 2017 ·

Everyone loves pizza! In this short video, we show how to put together a cute pizza themed party featuring a giant pizza cookie, felt pizza bunting, and mini pizza piñatas for party favors!

A DIY pizza party perfect for family night and kids of all ages. Giant pizza cookie, pizza garland and pizza pinatas

Welcome to our second installment of Party Starters! For this party, all the food, decor, and favors were modeled after everyone’s favorite food: pizza! The whole video (it’s only 4 minutes long!) can be found here. It shows how to make each DIY and showcases the whole party set up. We’ll be linking to each individual project below and sharing some back stories so keep reading!

This was the first party we shot and because of that, there is a real lack of photos to share! We promised behind-the-scenes shots into every party but the reality was that the first day got off to a bit of a slow start! We weren’t totally sure how the whole set up was going to go or what the production team had in mind so it took a little while to get ready. By the time this party was done we felt the need to rush into the next one so we could finish them both in the same day.

Malissa’s husband Greg was supposed to be nabbing the shots as we filmed and helping to get the finals but he didn’t do a very good job. haha! Just teasing Greg–we appreciate all the help you gave us and we know there were many reasons why you couldn’t be up there photographing all day :D

But being the first party, there was definitely a learning curve for this one, so we were all glad we got the easiest party out of the way! And I was extra glad that we chose to do the easier parties this day because I was completely exhausted! We talked a little bit about why it was all so tiring in our Donut Party post the other day but there was a whole other story/disaster/nightmare that happened the night before this first day of shooting.
