DIY Faux Industrial Metal Marquee Light

October 5, 2015 ·

Paint paper to get a faux vintage metal patina and make an industrial marquee light ajoyfulriot.com @ajoyfulriot

I absolutely love vintage signage and how great would it be to find an old letter from a sign that was appropriate for both your name and your home decor?! I’ve had the dream for a long time but I’ve still yet to ever find a way to collect such letters (where do signs go when they die??). Aside from being able to even find them, I doubt it’d be easy to get letters that actually fit in your home, decor/color-wise and finding letters that meant something to you. The solution for me was to make my own industrial looking marquee letter!

But using actual metal would be even harder than finding an old, unused sign. Firstly, metal is hard to work, it’s heavy, hard to manipulate and you can easily get cuts. Secondly, it’s heavy and I hate worrying about appropriate anchoring for such heavy items.

So, instead of using actual metal, I created a faux weathered metal look via paint. What’s more, is I didn’t even use wood, I used paper! That’s right, poster and foam boards create the base of this light, providing me with a super lightweight light that looks just like the real thing but cost less than $20 and only took a few hours to make. DIY mini marquee light for your desk! | A Joyful Riot

Today is National Swap Idea Day! Didn’t you know that?? :D Well we knew and we decided to commemorate it by throwing together a blogger swap with some of our favorite DIY girls from around the web. Amazing right!?

Well since we got to come up with a fun project, send it to a blogger we highly admire AND we received a fantastic project to keep and display on our desks, we sure think it’s pretty amazing!

This is only the first in what we hope to become a quarterly blogger swapping collaboration! Each swap will feature a theme and for our first one we chose desk accessories/office supplies and organizing tools. I may have been leaning towards that because I felt like my desk really needed some accessories and organizing help. Call it manipulative but I DON’T CARE because I got the most perfect thing back from Christina of Christina Williams Blog and it has completed my desk, nay I say my life!

Isn’t this desk caddy so nifty?! I love how each little glass fits perfectly in it’s spot and is filled with cute and necessary items and I OBVIOUSLY love the mint color, it’s perfect for my space! Can you believe I had no push pins?? Seriously! I didn’t own one and I often need them so I couldn’t be happier that I now have so many! I think a cork board DIY may be in my near future..

My project may not be as useful as the one I received but I just hope Sara didn’t need any push pins! haha! I think this little marquee light came out super cute and, for me, it’s important to have whimsical pieces around my work area that keep me motivated and inspired so I hope Sara gets that out of this piece.

January 3, 2018 ·

This movie night party rivals the red carpet with DIY free printable flair pins, an easy glittery star marquee light, and three amazing popcorn mix recipes to share!

popcorn bar with all the toppings

We saved the last of our Party Starters! videos for last: this colorful and fun movie night party is our favorite one of them all!

We’ve all seen countless movie night inspired parties and popcorn bars in our time (and on Pinterest :D) but we have to say we love how ours turned out. Rather than just gold, red, and black we incorporated fun colors like turquoise, pink, mint, and blue. You may have noticed throughout our Party Starters themes, pink somehow made it into all of them haha! Pink is a very versatile color you know! Or if you didn’t know that, now you do :) We really love how it made each party have its own unique palette and fun vibe.

Check out our other Party Starters posts here: donut party, sprinkle themed party, and pizza party!

Throw a super colorful and fun movie night party for the whole family!

The movie night party was the first party we shot on our second day of shooting. The whole video with all of the projects can be found right here. The movie ticket backdrop was probably the most stand-out part and it made the whole corner ready to party! This isn’t a DIY in the video-its just super simple: hang colored tickets (we got ours at Zurchers) with tape from the ceiling to create a colorful background for your popcorn bar!

Here’s a fun behind-the-scenes look at some of the shooting crew and our set up:
