DIY Sprinkle Tablecloth

September 15, 2014 ·

sprinkletablecloth2 sprinkletablecloth1We are now in the second week of birthday-related tutorials! Which also means we are one week closer to our BIRTHDAY! Oh man.

Oh how we love sprinkles around here! They are just so bright and cheerful. Pair this tablecloth with our sprinkle silhouettes and clothespins for a fun sprinkle party!

I actually was looking for a different stamp when I happened upon my foam stickers and noticed the perfect little rectangles and totally changed course when I realized these would be perfect for sprinkles.sprinkletablecloth3

    Materials

  • Paint in 4-6 colors //
  • White butcher paper //
  • Foam or foam stickers //
  • Acrylic block //
  • Felt //
  • Scissors

sprinkletablecloth4 1. Take the white butcher paper and place it against your table to measure how long it should be. Cut the paper a few inches longer than the width and length of the table. If you have an extra wide table, buy butcher paper wider than 30″ but for my table the 30″ was just right.

2. Put the paper down where there is enough room- for me this was the floor. You will need something to keep the paper from rolling up like books!

3. Take the rectangle foam or foam sticker and place on top of the acrylic block.

4. Make a stamp pad (see detailed pictures here)

5. Stamp one color at a time, placing rectangles in random directions and watch the tablecloth become more colorful.steps_tablecloth2

Aren’t sprinkles just the cutest? I used the following colors: purple, bright blue, yellow, light pink and mint. So many color combinations would look fantastic.sprinkletablecloth5 sprinkletablecloth7

Birthday Candle Mobiles

September 11, 2014 ·

candlemobiles Mobiles are not just for nurseries! They are totally perfect for party decor and now that I have realized that, you may be seeing a lot more mobiles on the blog. First up, birthday candle mobiles!

These are so simple and bright and cheerful. I paired them with yellow daisies because what is a happier flower? The only word of caution here is that the candles and string tend to get tied up in one another if you are not careful, which is why some of my mobiles are not as full of candles as I was originally planning. DSC_0706-3

    Materials

  • Birthday Candles (I used 48) //
  • Nylon string //
  • Scissors //
  • Wooden embroidery hoops //
  • Wrapping paper //
  • Glue Stick //
  • Ceiling hook (to hang) //

mobiles

1. Take your wrapping paper and cup several strips about 3/4 inches wide. I used 5 strips per embroidery hoop.

2. Use a glue stick to coat the embroidery hoop. Just do a small section at a time and wrap the paper around the hoop carefully. Make sure that after each loop you use the glue stick to coat the wood and part of the paper too.

3. Take your birthday candles and use thicker nylon string to wrap around the top of each candle. Use a double knot to secure. Then wrap the string around the embroidery hoop and tie a double knot around the hoop. Continue until you have placed as many candles as you want on the hoop.

4. Next, hang up your mobile using a ceiling hook.

steps_mobile2I actually had all the materials on hand which was amazing- you may need to buy candles or thicker string but that is probably it! Now enjoy your party mobiles (just please please don’t light the candles)!

Cup Cakes

September 10, 2014 ·

193405So guess what?! I lied the other day when I said this birthday wasn’t special-er than other birthdays. Because it most certainly IS more special than at least the last three. Malissa is coming to Utah to spend it with meee! That’s right, three long years my twin and I haven’t gotten to parade around together on our birthday sipping milkshakes and shirking all life’s boring duties, like school and work. But this year. This year is different. And we can hardly wait!!

In the meantime, we’ll count down the days with birthday crafts, mmk? And I’m pretty in love with this one. Party Pail sent me some cute little treat cups and I’ve been thinking of so many things to do with them. Today I give you, Cup Cakes.

_195007195615-1Get it? CUP cakes! Ba dum tss!

    Materials

  • Treat Cups //
  • Cardstock //
  • Paper Straws //
  • Yellow Tissue Paper //
  • Scissors //
  • Hot Glue Gun //
  • Treats //

Make some paper straw candles by cutting your paper straws in fourths then fold a little square of yellow tissue paper and twist it on the bottom. Put a little dab of glue inside one end of your straw piece and stick the tissue paper in there.

Fill your cups with treats. The awesome thing about these cups and that they’re the perfect size. Perfect for all kinds of candy, toys, cookies, basically anything you can think of!

201829Trace the opening of a cup on some card stock (so probably this step should be before thata one ^ but hey….) and cut your circles out. Dab some hot glue all along the rim of your cup then stick the circle to it.

6391849Put some glue on the bottom of your paper straw candles and adhere them to the top of your cakes!

6461238Won’t your birthday party guests just be delighted by the clever way you’re handing out their treats/favors? I think so.

Glitter Birthday Jewelry

September 9, 2014 ·

DSC_0667 DSC_0646Birthday post #2! Your birthday only comes once a year so of course you need customized jewelry to wear on your special day! And of course this jewelry is full of gold glitter. What better way to make you feel extra special?!

DSC_0648

I picked the word HOORAY because it accurately describes how Machelle and I feel about our birthday. Hooray! And then of course I had to make earrings that were the age we are turning!

    Materials

  • Shrinky Dinks for inkjet //
  • Word template (download several options here) //
  • Glue //
  • Glitter //
  • Clear gloss spray paint //
  • Gold chain //
  • Jump rings //
  • Spring ring clasp or lobster clasp //
  • Earring Post pad //
  • E-6000 glue //
  • Earring back stopper //

DSC_0661

1. Print out the word, numbers, or trace what you want the jewelry to be on the shrinky dinks. Just remember that when you bake it, the shrinky dinks shrink about 4 times in size!

2. Cut out the letters/numbers/word. Use a hole punch to punch holes where you want the jump rings to go for the necklace.

bdayjewelry1

3. Bake the shrinky dinks according to instructions-  I did mine at 180 degrees for 5 minutes.

4. Wait a few minutes for the shrinky dink to cool down, then coat it liberally in glue.

bdayjewelry2

5. Sprinkle the glitter all over the glue. Shake the excess glitter off and then let the glue dry all the way.

6. Use a clear spray paint to coat the glitter. This helps keep the glitter in place- although a few strays will find their way unto your clothes!

bdayjewelry3

7. Place a jump ring through the middle O’s. If I had a hold punch, I probably would have punched holes before I baked the shrinky dinks and placed the jump rings through those holes.

bdayjewelry4

8. Place the chain through the jump ring and then use pliers to close the clasp securely around the chain. Attach the clasp at the end of the chain and then wear your new necklace!

bdayjewelry5

9. For the earrings, I just used E-6000 glue to secure the 2 and the 6 to the posts and waited for them to dry completely.

bdayjewelry6

What word best describes how you feel about your birthday?! I really love the “hooray” necklace and I think I will make a few more using different words!

I always forget how fun shrinky dinks are too and now I have loads of ideas of how to use them! Sometimes revisiting childhood crafts is the best way to spark new craft ideas. And revisiting a childhood favorite also seems like a perfect thing to do around your birthday.
